John Fien is a Professor of Professional Practice at RMIT University in Australia. RMIT is the oldest tertiary institute in Melbourne, having been established as the Working Men's College in 1887, with the aim of bringing applied learning, vocational training and the liberal arts to the working people of Melbourne. Today, RMIT is a dual-sector institution – being a registered TVET provider and a PhD conferring university. John is a leading interdisciplinary researcher and has completed projects on topics as diverse as TVET, and the green economy, ethical cities, youth leadership for sustainable development, school-community partnerships, and skills in disaster management John is one of the editors, with Dr Rupert Maclean, of Work, Learning and Sustainable Development, the first global review of TVET for sustainable development. In this field, he has also undertaken an analysis of strategies for sustaining the green skills agenda in Australia, assessed the education and training needs for green construction in Australia, and reviewed the international impact of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development on TVET.
