Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute(SXPI) have approximately 20,000 students living on campus and SXPI is one of the largest TVET institutions in China, certainly it is the biggest in Shaanxi. It provides a 3-year diploma to students across 65 programmes covering such areas as manufacturing, electronics and electrical, mechanical engineering, information technology, business, public service, automotive, logistics, civil works, textile, clothing and arts. SXPI has a good reputation in China due to its quality TVET programmes and high graduate employment rate. To achieve our goal in being a sustainable institution, we believed that we needed to look at three key areas:
  • Campus operations
  • Teaching and learning; and
  • Lastly, we needed to look at research across the globe not only to learn but to contribute to an already wealth of knowledge
International Programmes. SXPI has many overseas study programmes including Green and Sustainability. In 2011, the school signed a student study programme with Ostfalia University of Applied Science in Germany. Since then, SXPI has sent students each year to attend a two-week International Summer University (ISU) in Germany. This programme covers renewable and sustainable energy technologies such as wind, solar, hydro-electric and geothermal etc. Students attend lectures on the history, geography, culture and sustainable energy as well as visiting a green village, a power-station generated by waste products, and large cities in northern Germany. This programme improves the knowledge of our students and reinforces their awareness and broadens their knowledge of renewable energy. A total of 27 students and 4 teachers have attended this programme since 2011. This college is now working with Madison Area Technical College in the USA on a 2019 Youth Education Summer Programme which will focus on environmental sustainability. Students will learn about the USA, the relationship of culture to the environment and experience hands on work with renewable energy and habitat restoration. It is hoped that 1 teacher and 10 students will be able to attend the two-week programme. Research The UN designated 2005-14 as the “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development”, because it wanted to create a more sustainable future for present and future generations. We know that TVET is growing in importance and popularity and has the ability to impact significantly on the development of a nation. However, if such development is not sustainable, we will end up with a world where there is no future for our future generations. .
